Yuri Zhuravlyov
Yuri Ivanovich Zhuravlyov (14 January 1935 – 14 January 2022) was a Soviet and Russian mathematician, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1965), and Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1992). He was Deputy Director for Research at the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of RAS, where from 1969 he headed the Laboratory (later Department) of Pattern Recognition, and an Honored Professor of MIPT (2004). In 1997 he founded and headed the Department of Mathematical Methods of Forecasting at the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of Moscow State University. He founded and edited the international journal Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis. He created the theory of local optimization algorithms, the estimate calculation algorithms, and the algebraic approach to the synthesis of correct algorithms, which shaped modern pattern recognition and forecasting. His scientific school counts more than 100 candidates and 26 doctors of science, among them four academicians of RAS, including Konstantin Rudakov. Lenin Prize (1966), USSR Council of Ministers Prize (1989), Lomonosov Prize of the 1st degree (2003).
Professional interests: mathematical cybernetics and theoretical computer science, discrete analysis, local algorithms of information processing, pattern recognition and forecasting, decision making from incomplete and inconsistent information.
